Frequently Asked Questions

Bits n Bobs is in its early stages, but our vision is big. Right now, we are collecting donated craft supplies and building the foundation for a permanent creative reuse shop in Santa Cruz County. Every question we answer here reflects both where we are today and where we are headed. By donating, participating, or simply spreading the word, you are helping us grow into a community space where creativity is accessible, affordable, and sustainable for everyone.

Is Bits n Bobs a nonprofit?

No. Bits n Bobs is not a 501(c)(3) nonprofit — we are a community-driven social enterprise.

Why isn’t Bits n Bobs a nonprofit?

We chose not to pursue nonprofit status because our vision is to build a self-sustaining creative reuse shop that can thrive for the long term. Nonprofits often rely heavily on grants and donations, which can limit flexibility and put their future at the mercy of outside funding cycles. Instead, we are creating a social enterprise — a community-focused business that uses sales of affordable supplies to fund its mission.

This approach allows us to:

  • Create lasting impact: A permanent reuse shop supported by steady sales will ensure Bits n Bobs continues to serve the community for years to come.

  • Keep prices accessible: By reinvesting revenue into operations, we can keep supplies affordable while covering the costs of rent, staffing, and growth.

  • Stay focused on our mission: Without the obligations of traditional nonprofit governance, we can devote our energy to building a welcoming, inspiring space for creativity.

  • Build community ownership: Supporters know that every purchase and every donation directly fuels the shop’s success, without being filtered through grant restrictions or outside agendas.

In short, Bits n Bobs is not a nonprofit because we believe the most sustainable way to achieve our mission is to build a community-powered reuse shop that can stand on its own, supported by the people it serves.

How does this affect donations?

Because we are not a 501(c)(3), financial donations and supply donations to Bits n Bobs are not tax-deductible. However, they are still incredibly valuable. Here’s why:

  • Supply donations keep materials out of the landfill and will directly stock our future reuse shop.

  • Financial donations help us cover storage, transport, and startup costs as we work toward a permanent location.

  • Community support builds the momentum we need to secure space and grow into a full-time resource.

Every contribution, even without a tax deduction, creates real impact: less waste, more creativity, and a stronger community.
